Project Description

The importance of building strong working relationships

Winning repeat business is a crucial part of our industry, and we take great pride in the fact that a large proportion of our contracts come as a direct result of works that have been completed to such a high standard that the client or contractor has requested to work with us again.

One recent example of this was being chosen to work with main contractor Conamar Building Services at the Premier Inn hotel in Faversham, Kent. Having worked with Conamar previously on the Premier Inn refurbishment project in Tunbridge Wells in 2019, we were delighted to be appointed by them again to work on their second Premier Inn project.

Paul Michaelson, Construction Director at Eden Facades, comments, “Conamar have a great team and we work well together. We’re very pleased to be building a lasting working relationship with them.”

A good night’s sleep guaranteed

The site for the new 84-bed timber-framed hotel is close to the M2 motorway and a five-minute drive from Faversham town centre, with direct trains to London from Faversham station making it a good base for exploring the Kent countryside.

Our package of works for the build included all external facades with the exception of bricks and glazing, and in this case the specification was to install Rockpanel cladding, aluminium surround panels and copings, and monocouche render on the building’s gable ends and main entrance.

The Rockpanel planks were installed in three colours; Rhinestone Oak, Ceramic and Ebony Granite, and fixed at intervals to create a striking visual effect against the brickwork. Made from basalt, a volcanic stone, Rockpanel cladding is not only a natural material, making it an environmentally friendly choice, it also has the benefit of a long lifespan. Bronze metallic coloured aluminium was specified for the window box surrounds, as well as for the panels between the windows and the low-level render.

On the façade design, we were given the specification and initial design, and our in-house design team were able to collaborate with the Conamar team and the architect to offer our advice.

To the gable ends of the building, we applied white monocouche scratch render. Consisting of one coat, monocouche render has the advantage of being fast to apply and is the ideal solution for a low maintenance and durable finish. Monocouche render must be applied by an experienced installer with the correct preparation, to avoid any cracking.

Streamlined project management

As we were responsible for installing multiple facades, planning the schedule of works on site was straightforward. For main contractors, the advantages of having one subcontractor dealing with multiple facades means that planning and project management is more efficient, there is one point of contact, and no duplication of the various steps in the procurement process.

At Eden Facades, we have found that taking this more streamlined approach allows us to accurately plan and manage the schedule of works, as we know exactly how long each part of the installation will take, when deliveries are due, and there are no unnecessary hold ups caused by waiting for other trades to finish before we can get on site.

Now the project is complete, the hotel is open to receive guests, and we look forward to working with the team at Conamar again in the future.
