Meet the Team: Michael Dillon, Estimator

We’re delighted to welcome Michael Dillon to the Eden Facades team, who recently joined as an Estimator. Michael brings valuable experience from a wide range of façade projects and is continuing his professional studies alongside his role here.

At Eden, we believe our people are central to our success, and we’re excited to share more about Michael’s background, his current role, and his aspirations for the future.

Firstly, welcome to the team! Can you tell us a bit about your career so far and the projects you’ve worked on?

Thank you. I began my career as a labourer. My dad introduced me to a role in the construction sector, which led to a job at OCL, the same company where he had worked. After six months on site, I moved into an office-based role as a commercial trainee while also studying quantity surveying one day a week. Over time, I progressed into an Assistant Estimator role, and since joining Eden, I’ve taken the next step as an Estimator.

As an Assistant Estimator, I was involved in a wide range of projects – from smaller façade schemes through to the company’s largest to date, a £35 million student accommodation development for the University of Brighton. That experience provided me with valuable exposure to large-scale façade and recladding projects, laying a solid foundation for the work I’m now undertaking at Eden Facades.

Since joining the business, I’ve already secured my first project: a recladding and remediation scheme in Havering. Most of my work so far has focused on pricing recladding schemes, including EWI (External Wall Insulation) and brick slips rainscreen cladding, which has been a new and interesting challenge compared to the types of projects I previously worked on.

What does your role involve, and what do you enjoy most about it?

What I enjoy most is the variety. No two projects are the same, and each comes with its own set of challenges – whether that’s reviewing a design to make sure it’s buildable, selecting the most suitable materials, or finding ways to deliver cost savings to the client.

Typically, a main contractor or developer will approach us with a design for the façade package. My role is to review the information, assess its practicality, and prepare a comprehensive lump-sum price for the works. Often, the designs we receive require development, so part of the job is proposing solutions that make the project both achievable and cost-effective.

The estimating team works closely together, reviewing each other’s work and sharing ideas, which is invaluable when tackling complex projects. For me, the most rewarding part of the job is securing the work, particularly after investing significant time in pricing and re-pricing to find the best solution for the client. Winning a project always feels like an achievement, and that’s something that motivates me.

You mentioned that you are currently studying quantity surveying. How does your training fit into your work week and your future progression?

I’m continuing my quantity surveying degree, which I study one day a week. Eden has been very supportive, and I’ve been able to apply what I learn directly to my role. The course provides a broader perspective on construction, which complements my specialist experience in facades. So far, I have completed two years and have another three to go before I graduate.

Progression is key for me, and the management team have been supportive throughout. I’ve listened to the company’s five-year plans, and they align perfectly with my ambitions. My goal is to continue developing my skills and progress towards becoming a Senior Estimator upon completing my degree.

You mentioned working with Carl Norman again – how has that been?

It’s been great. Carl originally trained me when I first started in estimating, so I was pleased to have the opportunity to work with him again. As Estimating Manager at Eden Facades, he has been highly supportive, which has been valuable in helping me step into this new role. His guidance has already helped me settle in, and I look forward to further developing under his leadership.

Would you recommend estimating as a career?

Yes, definitely. Estimating isn’t as widely recognised as disciplines such as quantity surveying or project management, but it’s an engaging and rewarding career. It combines problem-solving with client interaction, offering opportunities to visit sites and be involved in shaping projects from an early stage. It’s varied, challenging, and highly satisfying.

Finally, how have you found working at Eden so far?

It’s been a very positive experience. From day one, everyone has been welcoming, and the team is collaborative and supportive. I’ve also been impressed by the emphasis the leadership places on good management and staff development, which is refreshing to see. It’s clear that Eden Facades is committed to creating an environment where people can grow and succeed.
