We’ve expanded our services over the years in order to adapt to demand from our clients for a single contractor to supply multiple services but, as a company which began with rendering, we are also more than happy to take on a job where we can focus solely on these skills.

As a wise man once said, “Don’t forget who you are and where you came from”. Although we now take on projects of all shapes and sizes, we approach each one with the same level of quality and respect.

Of course, that’s not to say that rendering projects don’t come with their own challenges. There are many different aspects that can affect the success of a job, so on every project it’s vital we make a good assessment before starting on the works. With rendering specifically, we always need to take into account any bad weather forecasts and the fact that timings are always tight.

These challenges need particular attention on the smaller scale projects, where we’re usually on site for a shorter period of time and cannot afford any delays. Time may be limited, but the nature of the application means ideally allowing 2 – 3 days before applying the topcoat. It’s not a job to be rushed, because topcoat wash offs can mean completely re-doing the job, as well as having a big mess to clear up!

Below, we’ve looked at two recent rendering projects and how we worked with the clients to achieve their objectives.

Work in progress at Graven Hill

Graven Hill, Bicester

A unique site, Graven Hill in Bicester aims to provide up to 1,900 new and unique homes over the next ten years, offering both self-build and new homes tailored to each homeowner’s needs.

Backed by Cherwell District Council, the vision behind the development is to facilitate more opportunities for private homebuilding as well as meet the demand for more local housing. Graven Hill will have a fully functioning village, with a primary school, nursery and community centre as well as shops, cafes and a pub.

The first plots were made available in 2016 and will continue to be rolled out in phases. In 2019, whilst working on other plots in the development, we were asked to help with some work left by another company, that had not been completed to a high enough standard.

In order to remedy the problem, we were required to strip off the rendering and start again from batten stage. We removed all the existing battens, applying our own battens and render boards and then re-rendering using Wetherby Thin Coat Silicone Render. The main contractor and client were very happy with the result.

Roydon Primary school, Diss

This development in Suffolk was part of a £5.7m scheme driven by investment from Norfolk County Council to increase the number of local school places in Norfolk, by building new and extended schools in growing communities.

The primary school was looking to double its capacity to 420 places, through the addition of a new build with eight new classrooms, a new main hall, a food tech room, reception area, offices, staff room, toilets and storage space.

Sections of the old school building, some parts of which date back to 1886, were also being refurbished. We were tasked with bringing the existing school building in line with the aesthetic of the new build, using render and applying external wall insulation (EWI) to some areas.

On the new build we applied render onto block work, working very carefully as the weather was extremely cold. Ideally it needs to be 4 degrees or above for rendering to cure effectively, so this was a real challenge that needed to be overcome, requiring us to follow the sun around the site and avoid the shade as well as only applying render when the temperature and humidity allowed.
