We’re used to facing some challenges on projects, but 2020 threw everyone a curveball nobody could have anticipated. With lockdown and site closures early in the year, and everyday life brought to a halt, we were unsure how 2020 would unfold.
Spotlight on recent projects
Fortunately, we secured some fantastic contracts which could go ahead as planned, with our team, contacts and supply chain rising to the challenge and delivering some of our best work yet. At the end of the year, we asked our team at Eden Facades to talk about some of their favourite projects in 2020. Here’s what they said:
Tony Hill, Managing Director: Great Ormond Street Hospital, London
“This was our first project with well-established main contractor Jerram Falkus and we were proud to be involved with developments at this world-class children’s hospital.
Our scope at Great Ormond Street was to fit windows and install OKO Rieder cladding to the walls. OKO Rieder cladding is an alternative to timber or wood facades, made from slim, glass fibre concrete panels that offer class A1 fire protection and are non-combustible. We were really pleased with how the project went and look forward to working with Jerram Falkus in the future.”
Dave Pankhurst, Commercial Manager: RAF Lakenheath, Suffolk
“In summer 2020, our team worked with main contractor Kier Construction, Eastern, at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk to carry out rendering to the new and existing walls at the base, which is run and operated by the US Air Force. Our team installed Bluclad render board alongside the high-quality Weber render system.
“The works at RAF Lakenheath formed part of a much wider programme to support the US Air Force Operations in the UK, which will see the US Air Force F-35 Fighter Jet have its first permanent home in Europe.”
Steve Mountford, Site Manager: Meadowfield School, Sittingbourne and De Grey Road, Colchester
“Kier Construction have a strong track record in the building, refurbishment and conversion of schools and we were happy to have been appointed by them for the contract at Meadowfield school in Kent.
“I oversee all the rendering jobs at Eden, and our team did a great job here installing the StoVentec R render only system on Sto stainless steel framing system. The StoVentec R render only system specified has been designed to suit just about any substrate and is durable, so ideal for reducing future maintenance requirements.
“The project at De Grey Road in Colchester was our first job for main contractor RG Carter for some time. We were brought in to remove the existing cladding and replace it with a non-combustible alternative.
“We installed Rockpanel’s EN13501-1 A2 rated board and Rockwool Duo-Slab, which is a stone wool product developed for use specifically within ventilated cladding systems. The Dual Density insulation means the building retains optimal temperature regardless of the weather outside, which reduces heating costs and the building’s carbon emissions.”
Paul Michaelson, Construction Director: Brighton, Hove and Albion Football Club, Brighton
“We worked on the first phase of the build back in 2014, and were delighted to be back on site in the Spring for phase two, with the team from main contractor Buckingham Group. It has been a pleasure to be involved with this state-of-the-art project, where we installed Kingspan lightweight steel framing and the Wetherby insulated render system.
“The insulated render system needed to match the existing building, complete with horizontal groove in the feature panels, which involved buying in specific hot wire tools from Germany. The whole team works well together, and in fact we’re just putting the finishing touches to our prep work at the ‘Hub’ at the grounds, which will see us installing Kingspan SFS, with Cement Particle (CP) board, in 2021.”
Matt Green, Site Manager: St Helier and Epsom Hospital, Surrey
“We were brought onto this project at the St Helier Hospital in Sutton by main contractor ITC. Our scope was to install the EOS lightweight steel framing system with Siniat sheathing board and plasterboard linings to a new lift shaft in the Intensive care block. We applied the STO insulated render system to the external façade, alongside aluminium sills and copings.”
Obviously, we’re proud of all the projects we work on and there have been many more completed works in 2020. The projects chosen here by the team demonstrate the breadth of service we offer and the wealth of experience within our workforce.
We were very fortunate to have been in a position where overall there was not too much disruption to works in 2020 and we are very much looking forward to some exciting projects coming up throughout 2021!
