Project Description

Our latest project with Suffolk-based main contractor RG Carter is an extensive renovation of two residential blocks at Orwell Quay in Ipswich.

With work starting on site in 2022 and currently set to finish in Autumn 2023, our team is responsible for removing the existing cladding and installing new A1-rated systems. This includes erecting scaffolding around both blocks during the works and our team present on site every day until the project is complete.

The challenges of an occupied site

On any project, but particularly a long project such as this, keeping disturbance to a minimum for residents is always a key consideration, and one we have been closely working with the team at RG Carter to adhere to.

For example, for some residents, the scaffolding around the building has meant they have not been able to access to their windows and balconies, so to help with this our team is taking the scaffolding down as soon as one area is complete, rather than waiting until the end of the project to do a full strike.

Enjoying a good working partnership

We’ve worked with RG Carter previously on a number of projects, including a cladding remediation project at De Grey Road in Colchester, and were delighted to be brought in again for this extensive project.

Ricky Barnett, Eden Facades Site Manager for the Orwell Quay project comments: “As is the case with all strip off and reclad projects, the team never knows exactly what they will find once the existing cladding has been removed. At Orwell Quay, additional works have been necessary to ensure the refurbished buildings are compliant with regulations.

“Additional works means extra materials, and the current long lead times when it comes to ordering materials has been a challenge, but one we have been able to accommodate by raising early warning notices with the client and ensuring we order the material as early as possible.

“Now, with both blocks stripped, the process of installing the new system is well underway.

“We’re thrilled to be working again with the team at RG Carter on another strip and reclad project, at the Orbis Energy Building in Lowestoft.”
