With winter fast approaching and heating costs continuing to rise, the Green Homes Grant[1] launched by the government last month aims to create jobs as part of the COVID-19 economic recovery and help to reduce carbon emissions.
Using insulated render to improve thermal efficiency
The significant £2billion investment from the government forms part of the wider green package announced in the summer, which detailed that hospitals, schools and other public buildings would be set to receive £1billion for improving measures such as insulation, efficiency and green heating technology.
The investment is a welcome start, and with more than 35% of a building’s heat lost through the external walls, the best way to immediately and significantly improve the energy efficiency of any home is to invest in better insulation.
At Eden Facades we have many years’ experience working with insulated render systems and would argue that it provides the best option for upgrading thermal insulation. In existing construction, insulated render systems can extend the life of the building, by protecting and keeping the old structure warm and stable, and in new build projects it can simplify construction by having no impact on internal floor space.
Insulated render systems offer a flexible, cost-effective solution for improving insulation values and can be applied in a variety of finishes and colours to blend in with the overall aesthetic of the property.
We’re proud of the work we’ve achieved helping clients improve the energy efficiency of their buildings, working across many different types of project and with many different challenges.
Below, we look at just a few of the many projects we have worked on using the Wetherby insulated render system, a comprehensive range of fire safe and compliant products.
Whitfield Aspen school, Dover
Earlier this summer, we were brought in to work on the expansion of this junior school in Dover by main contractor Darwin Group.
We installed the Wetherby Epsitec insulated render system on timber battens to the walls of the existing timber framed building. The Wetherby Epsitec system has BBA (British Board of Agrement) certification and is suitable for both new and existing buildings. Epsitec, developed exclusively by WBS, has been designed to be used on projects where there is a need for an insulated render system that includes a drainage cavity and can be used on both lightweight steel and timber framed constructions. One key advantage of the Epsitec system is the reduced build time it requires, which results in associated cost savings.
Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club, Brighton
We were reunited with main contractor Buckingham Group for works on the expansion of the club, having worked with many of the team on the initial development in 2014.
We installed lightweight steel framing and sheathing boards to the walls, followed by Wetherby insulated render system. This was in line with the aesthetic of the existing building, using the same horizontal groove feature.
Riverside Leisure Centre, Chelmsford
The architects and designers on the project at Riverside were determined to make this leisure centre one of the most eco-friendly in the UK, and Wetherby’s cost-effective, environmentally sustainable insulated render system was put to good use on this project.
Through the use of specialised products and methods in the work carried out, Riverside went on to achieve a BREEAM ‘very good’ rating, putting the building in the top 25% of new buildings in the country for environmentally friendly design.
Partnerships bring benefits
We know that good suppliers are hard to come by, which is why take time to develop long term relationships with those that we know share the same values as us: those that uphold our environmental and safety standards, that deliver products or work to a consistently high standard and that can be looked on as a partner.
Bob Deane, Managing Director at Wetherby comments: “As the leading EWI manufacturer in the UK, our success as product suppliers is dependent on the quality of our products and the continual product development that keeps us at the forefront of our industry, but also on the strength of our network of approved, experienced installers such as Eden Facades. We are delighted to be in partnership with a team that we know is familiar with our systems and that will deliver a high-end result, every time”.
